Exploring Mactan’s Island Destinations

Mactan has a lot of neighboring islands ideal for island hopping, beach bumming, snorkeling and scuba-diving. The most famous is Olango Island or the Olango Wildlife Sanctuary, where many migratory birds flock during winter season from neighboring countries like Siberia, Northern China and Japan. Based on data gathered from studying these birds in Olango, these birds use Olango as their refueling station as well as their wintering ground. Many foreign as well as local tourists visit Olango to enjoy bird-watching as well as swimming and the island’s bountiful seafood.

Another famous island destination is Pandanon Island. The powdery white sand and the warm turquoise water makes this island the perfect get-away for those who are looking for a perfect day of fun under the sun. This island actually is a sandbar, part of a tiny, inhabited island of Getafe, Bohol…. thus not a part of Mactan, Cebu. But many local and foreign tourists include Pandanon Island as one of their island destinations when they are planning on enjoying an Island-Hopping Tour of Mactan Islands. The one-hectare stretch of white sand is carved by a lagoon ideal for swimming and snorkeling.

Their rooms are at 800 pesos, good for 2-3 persons and 100/extra person. Their catered meals are at 550 for 3 sets of meals ( breakfast, lunch and dinner) but excluding drinks. Guests could also bring their own food. They charge 300 per day for their adventure tours and that includes two guides for any destination the guests chooses. Biliran Island – Hidden Jewel of the Visayas

Biliran Island… a volcanic island rich in natural resources…. with numerous waterfalls, volcanoes, streams, pristine white sand beaches, beautiful islets, springs and they even have their own rice terraces. Biliran was formerly called Isla de Panamao, named after an ethnic fishing net but was later changed to Biliran derived from a native grass that’s abundant in the island, ” borobiliran”. One can enjoy different activities like water sports, adventure tours, hiking, biking and alike. This island paradise is a mecca for adventure seekers, mountain bikers and nature lovers.

My friend, Fritzie and I have always been looking forward to explore Biliran Island and finally got to enjoy and appreciate this island paradise. We boarded a passenger boat bound for Leyte, had a sidetrip to Sogod, Leyte where we had breakfast at a friend’s house and took a bus to Biliran Island. We found a cozy and comfortable yet affordable pension house in Naval and explored the town after checking in, looking for some means of transportation we could hire for the three days we planned of touring the island. We finally found a friendly and accomodating motorbike driver who agreed to take us around the island and all the scenic spots the island has to offer. He took us to the hinterlands of Southern Biliran on day one and to Northern Biliran on day two wherewe enjoyed a sumptuous lunch of native chicken roasted in a native oven at Agta Beach resort at Almeria. Day three was reserved for exploring the neighboring white sanded islets like Dalutan Island and Higatangan Island and it’s shifting white sandbar. But alas, we realized upon waking up that we didn’t have enough energy left for our third day trip and opted to rest our aches and sunburns in bed and explore Naval town furtherbefore heading home that night.

Siquijor…. La Isla del Fuego orFire island… Mystical, Enchanting, Spiritual… the island offers an unspoilt and unpolluted atmosphere with a peaceful ambience. The serenity of the whole province makes it a perfect get-away. It is a haven for hikers, bikers and nature-lovers. A stretch of white sandy beaches covers all of 102 kilometers of shoreline surrounding the island. It is an ideal place for swimming, snorkeling and beach-combing. It’s splendid array of coral formation, reef and other marine life is a must see for scuba-divers.

Siquijor is a magical and mystical island famous for shamans, magic potions, sorcerers and witches. An island plenty of natural wonders like caves rich in stalactites and stalagmites, waterfalls, springs, mangroves and a rainforest that boasts of splendid flora and fauna.

One can reach the island of Siquijor by ferry or motorized boat from Dumaguete, Cebu or Iligan City and docks at the ports of Lazi, Siquijor and Larena depending on the point of origin and the shipping company. Once you arrive at Siquijor, there are many transportations for hire to take you to your destination. Prevalent in the island are motorbikes and tricycles since the jeepneys ply the route of the entire island and takes long for you to get t0 your destination for these jeepneys stop for a couple of mintues at every municipality to take on passengers for other towns. So it would be wise to ask the resort where you would be staying to arrange pick ups from the port to their resort.

Postcards from Camiguin

We treated ourselves to a sidetrip to Camiguin Island on our way home to Cebu from Davao City. We boarded a passenger van in Davao going to Cagayan de Oro City via Bukidnon and stayed overnight in a hotel in CDO. We woke up early the next day filled wth excitement for we were going to Camiguin… the mystic island. We boarded a bus at the terminal in Agora Market for Balingoan, a town some kilometers outside the city. At Balingoan we took a ferry bound for Camiguin Island and docked an hour after at Guinsiliban Port. At the port, tourists are met by a deluge of locals offering trsnsportations for a tour of the island. We then hopped on a mini jeep or multicab after haggling with the price and had a grand tour of the island.

A Taste of Bicol

We boarded a passenger boat heading for Ormoc City from Cebu on a Friday night and arrived on the wee hours of Saturday morning and hopped on vans to take us to Tacloban where we waited for buses we could charter for our trip to Naga City. We passed through the suburbs of Leyte and crossed the famous, long and winding San Juanico Bridge. Passed through Catbalogan and Calbayog and reached the Allen Ferry Terminal in time to catch a ferry to take us across the San Bernardino Strait. The sea that night as we were crossing was rough with strong winds since a strom was brewing in some part of Luzon. But we reached the port of Matnog, the gateway to Luzon, safely and we boarded our buses again and travelled through Sorsogon’s countryside on zigzagging roads. And finally arrived in Naga City a little after midnight. We toured the city, sampled the variuos Bicolano food and delicacies, had our fill of Laing and Bicol Express, found this little street near the plaza lined by stalls selling all kinds of nuts where my sister and i could be found everyday during late afternoons or early evenings. After four days happily spent gallivanting around Naga City we headed home. We left Naga City early dawn onboard another chartered bus. The driver stopped by the Cagsawa Ruins where we had our breakfast and gazed in awe at the spectacular view of the majestic Mayon Volcano on a bright and sunny morning. After taking pictures we packed up and headed for Sorsogon and arrived at Pilar Port where we waited for the fastcraft to take us to Masbate where we would be boarding a passenger boat for Cebu. We spent a lazy afternoon in Masbate, visited churches and the town plaza. We had our dinner in a little cafeteria in Masbate’s commercial district before we boarded the boat to Cebu. A long and arduous trip but which I would always cherish.

When in Davao, you get to experience nature at it’s best! Tropical rainforests and wildlife, majestic mountains, white pristine beaches, numerous islands that are ideal for diving, beach-combing and adventure, a vast array of flaura and fauna, fun and adventure nature resorts, rich culture and friendly people. Davao boasts of a number of National pride like the majestic Mt. Apo – the Philippine’s highest peak and the home of world-famous Philippine Eagle or commonly known as Monkey-Eating Eagle… the country’s national bird and considered as the world’s largest eagle, the Waling-Waling Orchid – the “Queen of all Orchids” and world-famous for it’s beauty and rarity, the ” King of Exotic Fruits” which is the Durian.

Malapascua Island is a little island on the Northern most tip of Cebu. This little island paradise has everything a sunworshipper or adventurer seeks. It’s famous for it’s

white sand beaches, beautiful coral gardens and excellent dive spots, including Monad Shoal, an underwater plateau where thresher sharks and manta rays can be sighted on a regular basis. One can also visit nearby islets like Calanggaman Island, Carnasa and Maripipi Island on a rented outrigger.

To get to Malapascua Island, one takes a public bus or a private car to Maya wharf, Daan Bantayan and from there you climb aboard an outrigger to take you to the island, a 45-minute boatride. There are a lot of resort hotels and cottages with restaurants that offer native and international cuisines.

For one who appreciates the genuine wonders of nature, Apo Island is beyond doubt a soothing balm to the soul. This island paradise, 7 km off the southeastern tip of Negros Island, Philippines, is sure to fascinate every diver’s and traveler’s imagination. From the unique aquatic habitat and it’s dwellers, the rustic view of the old lighthouse, the image of a sunset tinting the sky with pink, to the magical feel of white sand on your toes while having a cold drink on a night of a full moon.

To get to Apo Island, one takes a ride by bus to Zamboanguita and get off at Malatapay Public Market. At the end of the market road you will reach the coast guard and boat post where you can rent either a small banca/outrigger or a bigger one to take you to Apo Island. The boat ride takes 45 – 60 minutes and is usually a bit wet. The island offers cottages and rooms for overnight stays. The only drawback is that the island doesn’t have electricity 24 hours a day. They shut off the power from the village generator at night. But this just makes you enjoy more of the laid back, peaceful, village life the island has to offer.

Life on this island is said to have it’s own pace. Perhaps this is where time has stood still…….. in the primitive and wild beauty that it is famous for.
